Introduction

Ephesians is not corrective in tone like Galatians. It is expansive.

Paul writes to unveil what God has accomplished in Christ and who we now are because of it.

Before behaviour is addressed, identity is established.

  • You are blessed with every spiritual blessing in Christ.
  • You were chosen before the foundation of the world.
  • You were adopted through Jesus Christ.
  • You are redeemed by His blood.
  • You are sealed with the Holy Spirit.

Ephesians begins in eternity. It reveals God’s eternal purpose: To unite all things in Christ.

The first half of the letter focuses on position.

  • Seated with Christ.
  • Saved by grace.
  • Raised to new life.
  • Reconciled into one body.

The second half focuses on practice.

  • Walk worthy of your calling.
  • Walk in unity.
  • Walk in love.
  • Walk as children of light.
  • Walk in wisdom.

Ephesians then closes with strength.

  • Put on the full armour of God.
  • Stand firm.
  • Wrestle not against flesh and blood.

This letter reveals three movements:

  1. Sit understand your position in Christ.
  2. Walk live in alignment with that identity.
  3. Stand remain steady against opposition.

Ephesians protects believers from insecurity.

You are not striving for blessing. You are living from it.

You are not building identity. You are expressing it.

You are not fighting for victory. You are standing in it.

At its heart stands this steady revelation: By grace you have been saved — through faith — and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God.

Ephesians will anchor you in eternal purpose, unify you in the body of Christ, and strengthen you for spiritual resistance.

You are seated. You are called. You are strengthened.


Ephesians 1 — Blessed, Chosen, and Sealed


Summary

Paul opens Ephesians with worship.

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ.

Not some blessings. Every spiritual blessing. And they are located in Christ.

Paul traces salvation back before time.

He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world to be holy and blameless in His sight.

In love, He predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ.

Salvation is not accidental. It is intentional. It is relational.

We are redeemed through His blood. Forgiven of sins. According to the riches of His grace.

Grace is not sparse. It is abundant.

God made known the mystery of His will — to bring unity to all things in heaven and on earth under Christ.

In Him we have obtained an inheritance.

And when we believed, we were marked with a seal — the promised Holy Spirit.

The Spirit is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession.

Assurance is secured by sealing. Paul then shifts from praise to prayer.

He prays that believers would receive:

  • The Spirit of wisdom and revelation
  • Knowledge of God
  • Enlightened hearts

So that they would know:

  • The hope of His calling.
  • The riches of His glorious inheritance in His people.
  • The incomparable greatness of His power toward those who believe.

That power is the same power that raised Christ from the dead and seated Him at God’s right hand.

Christ is far above all rule and authority. Everything is under His feet.

He is head over everything for the church.

And the church is His body — the fullness of Him who fills everything in every way.

Chapter 1 establishes:

You are not spiritually under-equipped. You are spiritually enriched.

Lift your eyes to where Christ is seated.

Power is not distant. It raised Him. It now works toward you.

Your identity is not fragile. It is anchored in eternity.

Ask for revelation. Pray for clarity. Let your heart be enlightened.

You are seated in Christ. Blessed. Chosen. Sealed. And Christ reigns over all.

Ephesians 2 — From Death to Life, From Division to Unity


Summary

Paul begins Chapter 2 with contrast. “You were dead in your transgressions and sins.

Dead — not weak. Not struggling. Dead.

Following the ways of the world. Following the ruler of the kingdom of the air. Living in the cravings of the flesh.

But then come two of the most powerful words in Scripture: “But because of His great love for us…

God intervened.

God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions.

It is by grace you have been saved.

Not only made alive — but raised up with Christ. Seated with Him in the heavenly realms.

Position changes identity.

God did this to show the incomparable riches of His grace in the coming ages.

Then Paul states it plainly:

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith — and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God — not by works, so that no one can boast.

Salvation is gift. Boasting is excluded.

But grace does not produce passivity.

For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

Saved by grace. Created for purpose.

Paul then addresses division between Jew and Gentile.

  • Gentiles were once excluded.
  • Strangers to covenant.
  • Without hope.
  • Without God in the world.

But now in Christ Jesus, those who were far away have been brought near by the blood of Christ.

Christ Himself is our peace.

  • He has destroyed the dividing wall of hostility.

  • He created one new humanity out of the two.

Reconciliation is vertical and horizontal. Both have access to the Father by one Spirit.

Built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets. Christ Jesus Himself the chief cornerstone.

In Him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord.

And in Him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by His Spirit.

Chapter 2 establishes:

  • Grace resurrects.
  • Position elevates.
  • Purpose activates.
  • Peace unites.
  • Believers are built together.

Dead became alive. Far became near. Excluded became included.

Grace did what effort never could.

You are not self-improved. You are resurrected.

You are not climbing toward God. You are seated with Christ.

  • You are His workmanship.
  • Crafted intentionally.
  • Prepared for good works.

And you do not stand alone. You are part of a household. A temple. A dwelling place.

Division has been destroyed. Peace has been established. Access is open.

Ephesians 3 — The Revealed Mystery and Strengthened Inner Life


Summary

Paul begins Chapter 3 by describing himself as a prisoner of Christ Jesus for the sake of the Gentiles.

His imprisonment is not political accident. It is kingdom assignment.

He speaks of the mystery made known to him by revelation.

In previous generations this mystery was not fully understood — but now it has been revealed by the Spirit.

The mystery is this:

Through the gospel, the Gentiles are heirs together with Israel, members together of one body, sharers together in the promise in Christ Jesus.

The dividing lines are erased. Inheritance is shared.

Paul became a servant of this gospel by the gift of God’s grace and through the working of His power.

Though he considers himself the least of all the Lord’s people, he was given grace to preach to the Gentiles the boundless riches of Christ.

Boundless — not limited. Not restricted. Not partial.

God’s intent was that now, through the church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms.

The church is not incidental. It is revelatory.

This was according to His eternal purpose accomplished in Christ Jesus.

In Him and through faith in Him, we may approach God with freedom and confidence.

Access is bold. Access is secure.

Paul then bows his knees in prayer.

He prays that believers would be strengthened with power through His Spirit in the inner being.

That Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith.

That you, being rooted and established in love, may grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ.

To know this love that surpasses knowledge — that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.

He closes with worship:

Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power at work within us — to Him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations.

Chapter 3 establishes:

  • Inner strength is necessary.

Your stability is not built on circumstances. It is rooted in love.

Let the dimensions of Christ’s love stretch your understanding.

Ephesians 4 — Walk Worthy of Your Calling


Summary

Paul now shifts from position to practice. “I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received.

Identity precedes instruction. The walk must match the calling.

He begins with unity:

  • Be completely humble and gentle.
  • Be patient.
  • Bear with one another in love.
  • Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.

Unity is not manufactured. It is maintained.

There is one body.

  • One Spirit.
  • One hope.
  • One Lord.
  • One faith.
  • One baptism.
  • One God and Father of all.

Unity rests in shared foundation. But unity does not mean uniformity.

Grace has been given to each one according to the measure of Christ’s gift.

Christ gave apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers. Why?

  • To equip His people for works of service.
  • So that the body of Christ may be built up.
  • Until we all reach unity in the faith and knowledge of the Son of God.
  • And become mature.
  • Attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.

Spiritual growth prevents instability. Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by waves.

Instead, speaking the truth in love, we grow to become in every respect the mature body of Him who is the head — Christ.

From Him the whole body grows and builds itself up in love as each part does its work.

Paul then contrasts the old life and the new.

You must no longer live as the Gentiles do — in futility of thinking.

They are darkened in understanding. Separated from the life of God. Given over to sensuality.

But that is not the way of Christ.

You were taught to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by deceitful desires.

To be made new in the attitude of your minds.

To put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.

Then Paul becomes practical:

  • Put off falsehood.
  • Speak truthfully.
  • Do not let anger lead to sin.
  • Do not give the devil a foothold.
  • Work honestly.
  • Share with those in need.
  • Let no unwholesome talk come out of your mouths.
  • Build others up.
  • Do not grieve the Holy Spirit.
  • Get rid of bitterness, rage, anger, slander.
  • Be kind.
  • Compassionate.
  • Forgiving one another, just as in Christ God forgave you.

Chapter 4 establishes:

  • Unity must be guarded.
  • Maturity must grow.
  • The old self must be removed.
  • The new self must be worn.
  • Speech must build.
  • Forgiveness must flow.

The new self is not artificial. It is created to be like God.

You are not striving toward holiness. You are walking in what was created within you.

Ephesians 5 — Walk in Love, Light, and Wisdom


Summary

Paul continues the call to walk worthy — now specifying how.

Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children.

Identity again precedes instruction. You are loved. Therefore imitate.

Walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave Himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.

Love is sacrificial. Love is active.

Paul contrasts love with impurity, greed, obscenity, foolish talk.

Such things are not fitting for God’s holy people.

For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord.

Not merely in light — light. Live as children of light.

The fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth.

Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness.

Awake, sleeper. Rise from the dead. And Christ will shine on you.

Paul then calls for wisdom.

Be very careful how you live — not as unwise but as wise.

Making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.

Do not get drunk on wine. Instead, be filled with the Spirit.

Being filled produces worship. Gratitude. Mutual submission.

He then applies Spirit-filled living to relationships.

Marriage becomes a living picture of Christ and the church.

Ephesians 6 — Stand Firm in the Strength of the Lord


Summary

Paul concludes Ephesians by bringing identity into endurance.

He continues relational instruction first.

Children are called to obey their parents in the Lord — this is right.

Honour your father and mother — the first commandment with a promise.

Fathers are instructed not to provoke their children, but to bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.

Authority must reflect Christ’s character.

He addresses slaves and masters — a context-bound relationship — yet the principle transcends culture:

Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not people.

And masters must treat others with fairness, remembering they too have a Master in heaven.

Then Paul shifts to spiritual reality. “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power.

Strength is not self-generated. It is sourced in Him.

Put on the full armour of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.

The struggle is not against flesh and blood.

It is against rulers, authorities, powers of this dark world and spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

Therefore, put on the full armour. Stand firm.

The armour includes:

  • The belt of truth.
  • The breastplate of righteousness.
  • Feet fitted with the readiness of the gospel of peace.
  • The shield of faith.
  • The helmet of salvation.
  • The sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.

And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests.

Be alert. Keep praying. Persevere.

Paul requests prayer for boldness — that he may fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel.

Even in chains, he stands as an ambassador.

He closes with peace, love with faith, and grace.

Chapter 6 establishes:

  • Armour must be worn.
  • Truth, righteousness, faith, salvation and Word protect.

Strength is not self-generated. It is drawn from Him.

  • You are adopted.
  • You are unified.
  • You are strengthened.
  • You are equipped.

Sit in your identity. Walk in alignment. Stand in confidence.

Christ reigns. And you are in Him.
