3 John Chapter Set

Faithful Partnership and Courageous Integrity

Welcome to the 3 John Study Hub — a personal letter that reveals how truth, love, leadership, and hospitality intersect.

3 John is relational and practical.

It celebrates faithfulness. It confronts pride. It affirms integrity.

This letter shows what happens when:

• Truth is lived consistently
• Hospitality supports mission
• Leadership is tested
• Character outweighs position

It reminds us that faithfulness in the “small” places matters deeply to God.

3 John — Walking in Truth, Supporting the Gospel, and Standing Against Pride

Summary of the Chapter

The elder writes to Gaius — a beloved friend. He begins with affection:

I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well.

Spiritual health is the priority.

He rejoices greatly to hear that Gaius is walking in the truth.

Not believing only. Walking.

There is no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.

Consistency delights Heaven.

Then the elder commends Gaius for his hospitality.

He has welcomed travelling brothers — even strangers.

He has supported them on their journey in a manner worthy of God.

Partnership with mission matters. “These men went out for the sake of the Name.

Not for profit. Not for reputation. For the Name.

By supporting them, Gaius becomes a fellow worker for the truth.

Participation strengthens purpose.

Then the tone shifts. Diotrephes is introduced. He loves to be first. Pride seeks prominence.

He refuses to welcome the brothers. He spreads malicious talk. He puts people out of the church.

Authority misused damages community. The elder promises to address this if he comes.

Then comes the instruction: “Do not imitate what is evil but what is good.Imitation shapes identity.

Anyone who does what is good is from God.Behaviour reveals alignment.

Demetrius is commended as one who is well spoken of by everyone — and by the truth itself.

Truth affirms character.

The letter closes warmly, again expressing desire for face-to-face conversation.

3 John reveals:

Walking in truth brings joy. Hospitality advances the Gospel. Pride fractures fellowship. Imitation shapes formation.
