Discovering the Father’s Heart

Learning to know God as He has revealed Himself through Jesus Christ, and allowing the truth of His character to transform everyday life.

Welcome to This Pathway

When you think about God the Father, what kind of Father do you imagine Him to be?

Perhaps you picture someone loving and compassionate.

Or perhaps, although you believe God is good, you sometimes find yourself wondering whether He is disappointed in you, distant from your struggles or difficult to approach.

You may have grown up with a loving earthly father, an absent father, a demanding father or experiences that made trust difficult.

And without even realising it, those experiences may have influenced what you expect from God.

But there is something important to discover.

We do not have to guess what the Father is like.

God has revealed Himself through His Word, and most fully through His Son, Jesus Christ.

This pathway invites you to look beyond assumptions, past experiences and familiar religious ideas to discover what Scripture actually reveals about the Father’s character.

His holiness.

His goodness.

His compassion.

His faithfulness.

His mercy.

And His desire for us to know Him through Jesus Christ.

As you come to understand who He truly is, you can begin recognising where your expectations of Him have been shaped by something other than His Word.

And that understanding can begin changing the way you pray, respond to difficulties, approach repentance, relate to others and walk with Him in everyday life.

There is no need to hurry.

You are welcome to explore these truths one question at a time.

The Truth That Changes Everything

When Philip asked Jesus to show the disciples the Father, Jesus gave a remarkable response.

Read John 14:6–11.

Jesus explained that whoever had seen Him had seen the Father.

He was not suggesting that the Father and Son are the same person. Rather, Jesus was revealing that He perfectly makes the Father known.

The compassion Jesus demonstrated towards suffering people, His willingness to welcome those who came to Him, His commitment to truth and holiness, and His obedience to the Father all reveal something essential about God’s character.

Jesus did not come to persuade an unwilling Father to love humanity.

Scripture tells us that God loved the world and gave His Son so that those who believe in Him might have eternal life (John 3:16).

The Father and Son are united in the work of salvation.

And through Jesus Christ, we are invited into a reconciled relationship with God.

Knowing the Father’s heart begins with knowing Jesus.

This matters because our understanding of God influences how we live.

If we believe He is impossible to please, we may approach Him with fear and constant self-examination.

If we assume He is indifferent to our difficulties, we may hesitate to bring our concerns to Him.

If we confuse His loving correction with rejection, we may withdraw when we most need to turn towards Him.

But as Scripture renews our understanding of His character, we can begin responding to Him differently.

Not by creating a picture of God that simply makes us comfortable.

But by learning to trust the God who has revealed Himself truthfully.

The Father is both holy and merciful.

Both righteous and compassionate.

Both worthy of reverence and approachable through Jesus Christ.

And the more clearly we see Him, the more our relationship with Him can be shaped by truth rather than assumption.

Explore This Pathway

Each article begins with a question you may have asked yourself or a struggle you may recognise from everyday life.

Together, we will explore what Scripture teaches about the Father’s character, consider how our experiences and expectations can influence our understanding of Him, and discover practical ways to respond to His truth.

You can begin wherever a question speaks to you.

There is no required order and no pressure to complete everything.

As new teachings are added, you will find them here, each offering another opportunity to know the Father more deeply and learn to walk with Him more confidently.

A Gentle Invitation

Knowing the Father’s heart is not simply about gathering more information about God.

It is about learning to relate to Him according to what He has revealed about Himself.

You may discover that some of your expectations have been shaped by experiences of disappointment, rejection or uncertainty.

You may recognise that you have confused God’s holiness with harshness, His patience with indifference or His correction with rejection.

Or you may simply begin to notice aspects of His character that you have never considered deeply before.

Whatever you discover, bring it honestly before Him.

Return to His Word.

Look carefully at Jesus.

Ask the Holy Spirit to help you understand and respond to the truth.

And remember that growing in your knowledge of God is not another performance to perfect.

It is an ongoing relationship in which you are invited to know Him more truthfully, trust Him more deeply and increasingly reflect His character in the way you live.

The Father is not someone we must invent according to our hopes or fears. He is the God who has made Himself known through His Son.

May this pathway help you discover His heart through Scripture and experience the transforming difference of knowing Him as He truly is.
