3 John — Walking in Truth, Supporting the Gospel, and Standing Against Pride
Summary of the Chapter
The elder writes to Gaius — a beloved friend. He begins with affection:
“I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well.”
Spiritual health is the priority.
He rejoices greatly to hear that Gaius is walking in the truth.
Not believing only. Walking.
“There is no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.”
Consistency delights Heaven.
Then the elder commends Gaius for his hospitality.
He has welcomed travelling brothers — even strangers.
He has supported them on their journey in a manner worthy of God.
Partnership with mission matters. “These men went out for the sake of the Name.”
Not for profit. Not for reputation. For the Name.
By supporting them, Gaius becomes a fellow worker for the truth.
Participation strengthens purpose.
Then the tone shifts. Diotrephes is introduced. He loves to be first. Pride seeks prominence.
He refuses to welcome the brothers. He spreads malicious talk. He puts people out of the church.
Authority misused damages community. The elder promises to address this if he comes.
Then comes the instruction: “Do not imitate what is evil but what is good.” Imitation shapes identity.
“Anyone who does what is good is from God.” Behaviour reveals alignment.
Demetrius is commended as one who is well spoken of by everyone — and by the truth itself.
Truth affirms character.
The letter closes warmly, again expressing desire for face-to-face conversation.
3 John reveals:
Walking in truth brings joy. Hospitality advances the Gospel. Pride fractures fellowship. Imitation shapes formation.

Reflection Questions
- John rejoiced because Gaius was “walking in the truth.” What does walking in the truth look like in the ordinary, practical areas of your life right now?
- Gaius demonstrated his faith through hospitality, generosity and faithful service to others. How might God be inviting you to express His love in practical ways to the people He has placed around you?
- Diotrephes desired to be first and allowed pride to affect the way he treated others. Are there any areas where the desire for recognition, control or being right could be influencing your heart or relationships?
- John says, “Do not imitate what is evil, but what is good.” Whose example is helping shape your life at present, and what qualities do you want others to see in you because you are following Jesus?
- Gaius, Diotrephes and Demetrius each left a different testimony through the way they lived. If your life were quietly telling others what God is like, what would you want your everyday choices, words and relationships to reveal about Him?
Closing Anchor — Integrity in Motion
3 John reminds us that truth must be lived, hospitality must be wise, and leadership must be humble.
Faithfulness may not always be loud — but it is seen.
Support what honours Christ. Resist what exalts self. Imitate what reflects God.
Walking in truth is quiet strength. And Heaven rejoices in steady integrity.
